CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that a project to reconstruct the intersection of Irving Park Road (Illinois 19) and York Road, in Bensenville, will begin, weather permitting, on Monday, July 13.
For the first few months of construction, daily, temporary lane closures will be required. Permanent closures will be put in place next year. Access to local businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
Motorists should continue to expect delays and should allow extra time while driving through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
The intersection project is the final phase of a larger $64 million grade separation project involving the Canadian Pacific Railroad tracks on Irving Park Road, just east of York Road. The new railroad bridge opened earlier this year.
The latest improvements consist of lowering and reconstructing the intersection to better accommodate traffic under the new bridge. Two through lanes will be built in each direction, with single left-turn lanes on Irving Park Road and dual left-turn lanes on York Road. A free-flow, right-turn lane on Irving Park Road will allow westbound traffic to turn north to York Road without stopping.
Irving Park Road also will be reconstructed from Addison Street to just east of the new railroad bridge and resurfaced from Addison Street to Busse Road (Illinois 83). York Road will be reconstructed from just south of Roosevelt Avenue to just north of Gateway Road and resurfaced from Green Street to just south of Roosevelt Avenue. Other facets of the project include improved drainage, modernized traffic signals, new sidewalks and enhanced street lighting.
The anticipated completion date is Fall 2017.
